Portland, Ore.-The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking comments on a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for a project to repair a 475-foot-long slide area along the Columbia River on the north side of Interstate 84 in Multnomah County.
The proposed repair work, which is sponsored by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) through funding from the Federal Highway Administration, will incorporate both traditional engineering and bioengineering techniques to ensure highway structural integrity and public safety along I-84. The Corps is providing services to ODOT under the Work for Others Programs.
The EA proposes several bioengineering techniques to include: placing planting mounds at the base of the slope with large willow trees; placing bundles of willow stakes near the toe of the slope; and planting rooted cuttings of upland native shrubs on the slope to provide in-water habitat for fish. The purpose of all the planting is to provide shade for improved fish habitat and to provide additional wildlife habitat.
The Corps is seeking public comment on the draft EA, which addresses the impacts of the work.
For more information about the proposed work, or to request a copy of the draft EA, contact Steve Helm at (503) 808-4778, Steve.R.Helm@usace.army.mil or: District Engineer, U.S. Army Corps of Engineer District, Portland, Attn: CENWP-PM-E, P.O. Box 2946, Portland, Oregon 97208-2946.
Comments must be received by July 2, 2003, and should refer to Public Notice: CENWP-PM-E-03-07.
