Portland, Ore.-The Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) are co-hosting a science and engineering event at the Portland District office Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The event is designed to educate and excite today's high school students about science and engineering. Several area colleges, universities and engineering firms are scheduled to attend the event to present students with future opportunities in the field of engineering.
The event will include short presentations on engineering and scientific work, hands-on engineering demonstrations and an opportunity for students to talk with college representatives and employees representing a variety of fields. Some of the topics and fields to be presented are: reservoir regulation, environmental permitting and protection, structural engineering, World Trade Center disaster recovery, hydro surveys, computer engineering and hydroelectric design.
The event is part of the National Engineers Week, Feb. 17 - 21.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is one of the nation's largest public engineering organizations, with a broad set of missions and capabilities, such as water and natural resource management, fisheries enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, environmental restoration and hydroelectric power.
**Note: The Corps of Engineers and the SAME organization are expecting 110 students, three colleges and universities, and seven engineering firms at the event.
