Portland, Ore.-A draft Sampling and Analysis Plan of sediments within Bonneville Dam's forebay is now available for public review and comment the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today.
The Corps' Plan describes how the nature and extent of any sediment impacts will be determined as well as how sampling and analysis will provide additional information for initial human health and ecological screening risk assessments. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) is currently reviewing the draft Sampling and Analysis Plan.
When electrical items containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other solid waste items were discovered in the dam's forebay on the Columbia River adjacent to the Bradford Island landfill, the Corps, ODEQ, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFW) removed those items, approximately 45 cubic yards of solid waste, with minimal environmental impact. The sediments, or soils, that the electrical items once rested on will now be sampled and analyzed for possible contamination.
The Corps and ODEQ welcome public comment through Feb. 2. The Plan can be reviewed on the websites of both agencies: http://www.deq.state.or.us/nwr/bradford.htm or https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/issues/Bradford/.
Parties wishing to review a printed copy of the document at the ODEQ Northwest Region Office, 2020 SW Fourth Ave in Portland are asked to call (503) 229-6729 to make arrangements. Copies of the plan also will be available at community libraries in North Bonneville and Stevenson, Wash., after Jan. 13.
