Corps hosts three SOLV clean-up events

Portland, Ore. - Three clean-up projects, part of Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism's sixth annual Down By the Riverside event, will be held at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facilities Saturday, May 19: one at The Dalles Dam, two miles east of The Dalles, Ore.; another at Foster Reservoir, near Sweet Home; and the third at Dorena Reservoir, near Cottage Grove.

The Corps of Engineers will join forces with the state of Oregon, scores of volunteers and SOLV to help clean up Oregon's rivers.

At each location, volunteers are encouraged to participate in the clean-up projects scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At The Dalles Dam, volunteers are asked to meet at Hess Park. The site is located along the Washington shore of the Columbia River. To get to the site, take U.S. 197 north from Interstate 84 (exit 87), and look for road signs directing you to a road leading east from the highway about 3/4 mile after crossing the river.

Activities that will take place at Hess Park include: removing trash from the park and Hess Pond, laying out a series of walking trails and transplanting cattails to the south shore of the pond.

To sign up or for additional information on the Hess Park event, please call Mark Eddings, The Dalles Dam, at (541) 506-7802.

At Foster Reservoir, volunteers should meet at the Foster Dam project office, located four miles east of downtown Sweet Home. Clean-up work will include picking up litter around Foster Reservoir, cutting back overgrown vegetation at viewpoints, and light painting to cover up vandalism. Last year volunteers picked up more than 700 pounds of trash. To sign up or for more information about the Foster Reservoir event, please call John Sandberg at (541) 367-5127.

At Dorena Reservoir, volunteers should meet at Harms Park, located along Row River Road, about seven miles east of Cottage Grove. Volunteers will be asked to clean up the reservoir's shoreline and the Row River Trail, to prepare both for the summer season. The project is being done in cooperation with the Coast Fork Watershed Council and the Willamette Valley Bass Trackers. To sign up or for more information about the Dorena Reservoir event, please call Tammy Schroeder at (541) 942-5631.

SOLV offers these tips for volunteers: bring gloves, drinking water and a lunch; wear sturdy shoes; dress for the weather; don't touch hazardous waste, tell the site coordinator; groups of more than five should call and register at the selected location; and have fun!

For more information about other Down By the Riverside events throughout the state, please call SOLV at (503) 884-9571 or (800) 322-3326.
