Water releases increase below Dexter, river rising

Portland, Ore.--Increased water releases from Lookout Point and Dexter dams are causing the Willamette River to rise one foot per hour.

Reservoir regulators expect the Willamette River just below Dexter Dam to rise two feet between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. River levels below the dam already have raised one foot since this morning.

On Wednesday, Corps officials discovered 35 to 40 paint cans that were dumped into the area of the Lookout Point Reservoir 9 miles upstream of the dam. Some paint has spilled onto the ground. Reservoir regulators have increased releases from the dams to prevent further environmental damage to the Willamette River by keeping the reservoir level below the area of the paint cans until they can be removed and the area cleaned up.

The Corps and the Oregon State Police are investigating the incident.
