Portland, Ore. -- Boaters with watercraft over 24 feet long are asked not to dock at either of the two boat docks at Philippi Park on the John Day River in Ore., the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said today.
Philippi Park is a Corps-operated campground accessible only by boat. The Corps posted signs announcing the restriction earlier this summer, but some boaters are still unaware of the limitation. The reason for the rule is simple: When a larger boat ties up to a dock, it monopolizes too much space and there is not enough room for other boaters.
Most large vessels have a small dinghy and operators are asked to anchor offshore and use the smaller boats to come ashore.
About 16,000 people visit the park per year to enjoy swimming, picnicking, fishing, waterskiing, sailboarding, and camping. Drinking water, restrooms and showers are available.
Although the park is accessible year-round, it is maintained only from April 1 through Oct. 31 of each year. Drinking water, restrooms and showers are closed from Nov. 1 through April 30.
