Corps of Engineers offers "Hatcheries, Dams and Salmon" workshop to educators

Portland, Ore. -- On Friday, Oct 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., teachers and youth leaders who teach all ages are invited to learn about Columbia River salmon and how humans impact their habitat.

To pre-register for the "Hatcheries, Dams and Salmon" teacher's workshop at Bonneville Lock and Dam, call David Weiss at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Bradford Island Visitor Center at (541) 374-8820. Additional information will be sent upon registration.

This workshop, sponsored by the Corps, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Northwest Interpretive Association, will include tours of Bonneville Fish Hatchery and Bonneville Lock and Dam. Participants also will receive A Teacher's Guide to Bonneville Dam-a manual designed by the Corps expressly for educators in the classroom-and the curriculum guide The Fish Hatchery Next Door. While the workshop is free, Washington state teachers who need clock hours for the workshop to fulfill their continuing education requirements are asked to pay $5.

The goal of the workshop is to introduce area educators to the resources available from the Corps and the Fish and Wildlife Service. Workshop instructors David Weiss, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Judith Maule, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, also hope to provide teachers with information that can be easily passed on to their students and that can be used to better prepare students for field trips to the dam.
