Cascade Locks, Ore. - Join the park rangers from Bonneville Lock and Dam as they celebrate the living history of an area known as the Cascades on the Columbia.
A day of living history demonstrations and storytelling is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fort Cascades National Historic Site. Learn about the historic uses of the river and the Fort Cascades site through the eyes of Native Americans, explorers (11 a.m.), soldiers (12 a.m.), fishermen (1 p.m.), riverboat captains (2 p.m.) and settlers (3 p.m.).
Fort Cascades is located one mile west of the Bonneville Dam second powerhouse, along Washington State Route 14. Bonneville Dam is located 40 miles east of Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash., along Interstate 84 and SR 14, respectively. Visitors can take I-84 to Cascade Locks, cross over the Columbia River using the Bridge of the Gods, turn left on SR 14 and proceed to the site. They also can travel on SR 14 to reach the site.
