Photography contest slated to help celebrate Bonneville Lock and Dam's 60th anniversary

Portland, Ore. -- If you love the Columbia River gorge and enjoy taking photographs, the Bonneville Lock and Dam photography contest is for you.

The theme is "Columbia River-Water is for Everyone." The contest is being sponsored by the Northwest Interpretive Association (NWIA) and the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bonneville Lock and Dam.

The contest is part of the 60th anniversary celebration of the dedication of Bonneville Lock and Dam by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on Sept. 28, 1937. Photographs must be taken either at Bonneville Dam or elsewhere on the Columbia River between Troutdale and The Dalles Lock and Dam.

Categories are: People (visitors, anglers, Corps employees, etc.); Facilities (spillway, powerhouses, visitor center, project office, fish hatchery, etc.); Scenic/Wildlife (views of the gorge, plants and animals native to the gorge, Bonneville rose gardens, etc.) Entries in these three categories will be separated into entries in two divisions: Division 1 for beginners, and Division 2 for advanced photographers. Division 3 is a separate category devoted entirely to historic photographs.

The contest is open only to non-professional photographers. All photographs except those in the historical category must have been taken within the last year. Each photographer may enter up to two photographs. Entries may be sent to the Bradford Island Visitor Center, Bonneville Lock and Dam, Cascade Locks, Ore., 97014, or dropped off at the Visitor Center between Sept. 7 and Sept. 13, 1997.
