Bonneville rangers go back to school

Portland, Ore.-- Park rangers from Bonneville Lock and Dam will work with students from Skamania School during a three-day environmental workshop to be held at the Bass Lake Natural Area near Bonneville Dam. Students from grades one to eight will visit the site on one of three days -- April 21, 22 or 28.

The workshop, which is a joint effort between the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Forest Service's Wind River Ranger District and the Skamania School District, is designed to promote better understanding about wildlife habitats. In addition to environmental studies and activities, students will also participate in a stewardship project.

Bonneville Dam rangers have been working with the Skamania School Board and teachers, as well as biologists from the Wind River Ranger District, since January to plan and implement an environmental education program for Skamania School.

Rangers will visit the school Thursday, April 17, to conduct in-class activities with 1st through 8th grade students in preparation for field trips the following weeks. Kindergarten through 3rd grade students will visit Bonneville Dam's Bass Lake site Monday, April 21, followed by grades 4 to 6 on Tuesday, April 22, and grades 7 and 8 on Monday, April 28th.

The program will explore how natural habitats are like homes. Students will experience meadow, forest and pond habitats as they move between activities. As part of the stewardship experience, younger students will participate in a tree planting ceremony while older students (grades 7 and 8) will perform a service project, removing non-native weeds and planting native plants (Douglas Fir, wild rose and snowberry bushes).
