Portland workshop reminder: Columbia River channel improvements

Portland, Ore-- Reminder: The last of three public workshops to discuss improvements to the current Columbia River navigation channel will be held Wednesday, Jan. 22, in the Rogue Room, Columbia River Red Lion, 1401 N. Hayden Island Drive, Portland, Ore.

The workshop will begin promptly at 7 p.m. with presentations by the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and environmental and industry representatives.

The Corps' Laura Hicks, study project manager, will outline the ongoing study of Columbia River navigation channel improvements. She will address the status of the current Feasibility Study, various improvement alternatives--structural (various dredging options), non-structural, regional port and no action-- current work on potential dredge disposal and environmental mitigation sites, environmental studies, and ecosystem restoration possibilities.

Project sponsors are the seven lower Columbia River ports: Vancouver, Kalama, Woodland and Longview in Washington, and Portland, St. Helens and Astoria in Oregon

The first meeting was held Jan. 14 at Kelso, Wash., the second at Astoria on Jan. 16. More public meetings will be scheduled throughout the five-year-long study.
