Portland, Ore.--Starting Sunday, Oct. 3, the Willamette Falls Locks at West Linn, Ore., will adjust its operating hours to open earlier in the day during the winter months.
The new hours will be from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and will continue until April 2000, the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, announced today.
"We have found that during the winter months our customers to use the locks more in the morning than in the evening," said Iram Mendez, Willamette Falls Locks project supervisor. "Recreational boaters make up a very large percentage of our customers. We want to accommodate their needs as best we can."
The Corps will continue to periodically re-evaluate the operating hours as user needs change. Boaters can provide input directly to lock operators at Willamette Falls Locks during regular operating hours or by calling the project office at (503) 656-3381.
The Willamette Falls Locks, built in the early 1870s, provides commercial and recreational lockages 365 days per year. The locks handle about 500 commercial vessels and 2,900 recreational vessels each year. The Corps has operated the locks since 1915.
