Volunteer three hours, have a good time, and improve environment

Portland, Ore. -- Do you enjoy watching birds? How do you feel about non-native plant species crowding out native species that are beneficial to wildlife? Do you spend any time hiking or fishing at Casey State Park or Bridgehole Fishing Access? You can make a difference -- improve these areas by volunteering only three hours of your time!

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and Oregon State Parks and Recreation at Casey State Park is hosting a Down by the Riverside Cleanup, Enhancement and Appreciation Day Saturday, May 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are needed to assemble and install birdhouses, remove invasive weeds, plant trees and clean up litter. This is a great opportunity for groups, such as Boy and Girl Scouts.

If you want to join in, dress in work clothes and sturdy shoes, and bring sunscreen and drinking water. Volunteers should register at Casey State Park, off Highway 62, just west of the Takelma Drive turn toward Lost Creek Lake, 30 miles northeast of Medford. Signs will be posted the day of the event.

If you are interested in making a birdhouse, please call to sign up by May 12 because supplies are limited. Drop-ins are welcome for all other activities.

For more information about the event, contact Park Ranger Tami Schroeder at the Corps' Rogue River Basin Project Office, (541) 878-2255, or Park Ranger Nancy McLeod at Stewart State Park, (541) 560-3334.

Down by the Riverside is a statewide event coordinated by SOLV (Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism) and the Oregon State Marine Board. Last year almost 1,500 volunteers participated in the event at 58 locations throughout the state. SOLV also coordinates a variety of cleanup and beautification projects throughout Oregon, including Great Oregon Spring and Fall Beach Cleanups and Oregon Adopt-A-River. SOLV works with government and corporate sponsors and volunteers to accomplish these tasks.
