> Portland, Ore. – While hazardous wastes such as PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are not normally good news, it is good news when they are being removed from the environment.

On Tuesday, Dec. 19, weather permitting, divers from Advanced American Diving Service, Oregon City, Ore., under contract to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin to retrieve power transmission system components from the Columbia River near the Corps' Bonneville Lock and Dam. Foss Environmental Services, Portland, Ore., also will be on hand to assure recovered materials are handled appropriately.

You are invited to cover the story firsthand. While you will not be able to get on the boats, you will be taken to a good vantage point on shore. Weather conditions can be unpleasant in the Columbia River Gorge, so wear warm clothing and boots!

Media who want to take advantage of this opportunity are asked to call Dawn Edwards in the Corps' Public Affairs Office, (503) 808-4510, by 3 p.m., Monday, Dec. 18. If the dive is cancelled or delayed because of weather conditions, you will be notified early Tuesday morning.

There is no public access to the dive area, thus on Tuesday, Dec. 19, media representatives should report directly to the Bonneville Lock and Dam Project Office at 9:45 a.m. The Project Office is the first building on the right as you enter the project. There is parking directly across the main roadway. To get to Bonneville Lock and Dam from Portland, travel east on I-84 and take exit 40 to the Dam. If you are coming from Washington, cross the Columbia River at the Bridge of the Gods and travel west to the Bonneville exit.
