Washington County lumber company seeks permit to fill wetlands

Portland, Ore.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating a permit application from Oregon Washington Lumber Company of Portland that requests authority to fill wetlands in Sherwood, Ore.

As part of its permit evaluation process, the Corps is requesting public review and comment on the proposed project’s impact to the environment prior to issuing or denying a permit for the work.

The lumber company is seeking a permit that would allow it to place fill in 5.32 acres of wetland within a 52-acre industrial site in Sherwood to develop an industrial park capable of holding large warehouse buildings and parking. If wetland mitigation is required, the applicant is prepared to create nearly three acres of wetlands adjacent to Rock Creek near the Tualatin-Sherwood Highway, to enhance 10 acres of wetland in the Rock Creek floodplain and restore about a half-acre of stream in the same area.

For a copy of the Corps of Engineers’ Public Notice, which describes the proposed project in detail access public notice no. 2000-00633 off the Corps’ Internet site at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/op/g/Regs/Pub_bull.htm.

Written comments should reach the Corps offices by Nov. 20, 2000, and should be mailed to: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Attn: CENWP-OP-GP (Rich Gebhart), P.O. Box 2946, Portland, Oregon 97208-2946. Comments also may be sent via e-mail to richard.a.gebhart@usace.army.mil.

The Corps also is soliciting input from federal, state and local agencies and officials, Indian Tribes, and other interested parties to help permit reviewers consider and evaluate the impacts of this proposed project on endangered species, historic properties, water quality, general environmental effects, and other public interest factors.
