Corps seeks input on North Santiam River dredging

Portland, Ore. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating a permit application from the Santiam Water Control District to perform maintenance dredging of the North Santiam River near Stayton, Marion County, Ore. As part of its permit evaluation process, the Corps is requesting public comments on the proposed project prior to making its determination on whether to issue or deny a permit for the work.

The work would include removing about 600 cubic yards of an existing gravel bar in the North Channel with an excavator initially and about 450 cubic yards of gravel annually over the next three years, for a total of about 1,944 cubic yards. The work is needed to maintain adequate municipal water supplies for the cities of Salem and Stayton. The excavated material will be redeposited along the bankline downstream.

The Corps will consider whether the proposed project meets standards of the Clean Water and Endangered Species acts and will look at the overall impact of the project on the affected area. A permit will not be issued until consultations required under the Endangered Species Act have been completed.

For a copy of the Corps’ Public Notice 2000-00714, which describes the proposed project in detail, please write to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ATTN: CENWP-OP-GP, P.O. Box 2946, Portland, OR 97208-2946. A copy of the public notice is posted on the Corps’ Internet site at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/op/g/notices/200000714.pdf. Photocopies of drawings supporting the proposed project are included in the public notice.

Written comments must reach the Corps by Oct. 17, 2000, and should be mailed to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Attn: CENWP-OP-GP (Dan Gresham), P.O. Box 2946, Portland, OR 97208-2946. Send e-mail comments to daniel.gresham.iii@usace.army.mil.

The Corps also is soliciting comments from federal, state and local agencies and officials, Native American tribes, and other interested parties.
