Corps seeks input on Isthmus Slough piling removal

Portland, Ore. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating a permit application from Knutson Towboat Company to remove more than 2,500 pilings from Isthmus Slough, near Coos Bay, Ore. As part of its permit evaluation process, the Corps is requesting public comments on the proposed project prior to making its determination on whether to issue or deny a permit for the work.

The work would include using a vibratory hammer to remove pilings from mile 0.8 through mile 9.8 of Isthmus Slough, from Coos Bay to Green Acres, Ore. The work is being proposed to remove potential hazards to fishermen and navigation caused by deteriorating pilings no longer in use.

The Corps will consider whether the proposed project meets standards of the Rivers and Harbors, Coastal Zone Management and Endangered Species acts and will look at the overall impact of the project on the affected area. A permit will not be issued until consultations required under the Endangered Species Act have been completed.

For a copy of the Corps’ Public Notice 2000-00647, which describes the proposed project in detail, please write to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ATTN: CENWP-OP-GP, P.O. Box 2946, Portland, OR 97208-2946. A copy of the public notice is posted on the Corps’ Internet site at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/op/g/notices/200000647.pdf. Photocopies of drawings supporting the proposed project are included in the public notice.

Written comments must reach the Corps by Oct. 16, 2000, and should be mailed to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Attn: CENWP-OP-GP (Ron Marg), P.O. Box 2946, Portland, OR 97208-2946. Send e-mail comments to ron.e.marg@usace.army.mil.

The Corps also is soliciting comments from federal, state and local agencies and officials, Native American tribes, and other interested parties.
