Corps seeks input on connector road project in Springfield

Portland, Ore. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating an application from Lane County Public Works to construct a four-lane road connecting Highway 126 and Jasper Road in Springfield, Ore. As part of its permit evaluation process, the Corps is requesting public comments on the proposed project prior to making its determination on whether to issue or deny a permit for the work.

The work would consist of building a 110-foot wide road from Main Street to Jasper Road with sidewalks, median strip, bicycle lanes and drainage channels. The purpose of the work is to reduce congestion at Main Street and 57th Street and to provide access to undeveloped land south of Springfield. The project would impact about 9.6 acres of wetlands along the route.

The Corps will consider whether the proposed project meets standards of the Clean Water, National Historic Preservation and Endangered Species acts and will look at the overall impact of the project on the affected area. A permit will not be issued until consultations required under the Endangered Species Act have been completed.

For a copy of the Corps’ Public Notice 2000-0056, which describes the proposed project in detail, please write to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ATTN: CENWP-OP-GP, P.O. Box 2946, Portland, OR 97208-2946. A copy of the public notice is available on the Corps’ Internet site at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/op/g/notices/200000056.pdf. Photocopies of drawings supporting the proposed project are included in the public notice.

Written comments should reach the Corps by June 19, 2000, and should be mailed to

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Attn: CENWP-OP-GP (Chris Thoms), P.O. Box 2946, Portland, OR 97208-2946. Send e-mail comments to chris.r.thoms@usace.army.mil".

The Corps also is soliciting comments from federal, state and local agencies and officials, Native American tribes, and other interested parties.
