Army Corps seeks input on Port of Nehalem maintenance dredging

Portland, Ore.--The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating a permit application from the Port of Nehalem requesting authorization to remove up to 60,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Nehalem River in Tillamook, Ore.

As part of its permit evaluation process, the Corps is requesting public review and comment on the proposed project prior to making its determination on whether to issue or deny a permit for the work.

The port would remove the material via pipeline dredge from the Highway 53 bridge at Mohler downstream to about River Mile 3.5. The dredged material would be stored at one of two disposal sites and then hauled off-site. The port is requesting the permit for dredging to reduce flood elevations and maintain a navigation channel.

The Corps will consider whether the proposed project meets standards of the Clean Water, Endangered Species and Coastal Zone Management acts and will look at the overall impact of the project on the affected area. The proposed project may impact endangered Salmon or its critical habitat. A permit will not be issued until consultations required under the Endangered Species Act are completed.

For a copy of the Corps’ Public Notice, which describes the proposed project in detail, please write to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Attn: CENWP-OP-GP (Teena Monical), P.O. Box 2946, Portland, Oregon 97208-2946. Written comments should reach the Corps offices by June 14, 2000, and should be mailed to the address above or sent by e-mail to teena.g.monical@usace.army.mil.

The Corps also is soliciting input from federal, state and local agencies and officials, Native American tribes and other interested parties.
