Portland, Ore. – The Bradford Island Visitor Center, part of the Bonneville Lock and Dam, will host a workshop for educators interested in furthering their knowledge about trees and forestry from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 10.
The workshop is free to educators. The deadline to register is March 1.
Project Learning Tree is an award-winning natural resource education program offering a teaching curriculum that "brings the forest into the classroom, said Patty Garland-Villegas, curator of education for the Columbia River Gorge Discovery Center and Wasco County Historical Museum.
Trained workshop facilitators will introduce participants to interdisciplinary teaching materials emphasizing a cooperative learning approach and incorporating critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Workshop participants will spend the day putting activities into practice, visiting with resource specialists and becoming familiar with the PLT curriculum guide.
Curriculum materials used and distributed at the workshop include the PLT Activity Guide, correlation of the National Science Standards Notebook, correlation of curriculum standards for both Oregon and Washington, and classroom posters.
The workshop is sponsored by the Oregon Forestry Education Program, U.S. Forest Service, Underwood Conservation District, the Columbia River Gorge Discovery Center and Wasco County Historical Museum, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bonneville Lock and Dam.
The Bonneville Lock and Dam is located east of Portland at exit 40 on Interstate 84.
