Food Stamp Program

The Food Stamp Program is the Nation's largest food assistance program, serving about 27 million low-income Americans in 2005. The program also serves as a source of demand for the products of American farmers and food companies. ERS conducts research on participation trends, benefits targeting and access, program outcomes, interactions with other assistance programs, and interactions with the economy.


Spotlights

Can Food Stamps Do More To Improve Food Choices? An Economic Perspective—Food stamp recipients, like other Americans, struggle with nutrition problems associated with choice of foods, as well as amounts. This series of Economic Information Bulletins compiles evidence to help answer the question of whether the Food Stamp Program can do more to improve the food choices of participants.

Effects of Food Assistance and Nutrition Programs on Nutrition and Health: Volume 4, Executive Summary of the Literature Review—This report reviews published research on the impact of the Food Stamp Program and other USDA assistance programs on participants' nutrition and health outcomes such as food expenditures, household nutrient availability, dietary intake, food security, birth outcomes, breastfeeding behaviors, immunization rates, and use and cost of health care services.
