A Selection of Afro-american Stocks Predating 1920

This is a list of published parts for "theater orchestra" -- one-on-a-part orchestra with the piano taking an important part - - of music by Afro-American composers. It starts at the turn of the century and runs through 1919 -- the very beginning of the jazz era. These are all period arrangements. The arrangers, save for Will Tyers, are white.

There are two lists: the first is of instrumental stocks for "theater orchestra" -- one or two instruments on a part with piano. The second is of orchestrations meant to be used as backing for vaudeville singers. These are for very small orchestra, including piano. The arrangements in the second list do not include a voice part. Most of them are very straightforward orchestrations from the voice-and-piano sheet music. For those numbers not currently (1992) in public domain a copyright number is given.
