Coverage focuses on African Americans, the American colonial period, the American Revolution, and the American Civil War, with news articles, eye-witness accounts and official reports of battles and events of the era. Also find editorials, advertisements and biographies, and stories about travel and leisure, arts, geographical descriptions, sports, and social events of the time. Collections include:

  • The Pennsylvania Gazette , 1728-1800; Godey's Lady's Book , 1830-1865; Freedom's Journal , 1827-1829; The National Era, 1847-1860; Provincial Freeman , 1854-1857; The Christian Recorder , 1861-1893; The Charleston Mercury , 1860-1865 (selections); and various Pennsylvania newspapers, 1819-1870 (selections).
  • The Charleston Mercury , The New York Herald , 1860-1865 (selections), and The Richmond Enquirer , 1860-1865 (selections), as well as other Civil War newspapers.
  • The Coloured American , 1837-1841; Frederick Douglass Paper, 1851-1855; The North Star , 1847-1851; and other African American Newspapers from the 19th century.
