NACA Technical Reports Server

Access: Publicly available resource

Description: Contains citations and full text of technical reports issued by the predecessor organization to NASA. The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics Technical Reports Server - NACATRS - covers areas such as: streamlining studies to improve the aerodynamics of aircraft; supersonic flight; wind tunnel testing; Cold War missile technology; reentry of space vehicles; and the possibility of manned space flight. Reports were issued from a variety of research centers, including the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory, the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory, and the Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory, or “the Cleveland laboratory,” (later renamed the Lewis Research Center).

From the NASA History website: "Between its founding in 1915 and its incorporation into NASA in 1958, NACA accomplished many technological feats. It was a major force for technological change in aeronautics. NACA’s efforts were in a large part responsible for turning the American airplane from slow cloth-and-wood biplanes of the World War I era into the jets of today. The foundations of NASA and the success of its many missions rest squarely on the cornerstone of NACA’s organizational and technical expertise."

A few NACA technical reports are available through the Library of Congress Technical Reports and Standards Unit (TRS) .
