America's Historical Newspapers - Series I, II, III ON-SITE ACCESS ONLY

Access: On-Site Access Only

Description: Americas Historical Newspapers features full text cover-to-cover reproductions of hundreds of historic newspapers published in 50 states and the District of Columbia. The coverage provides insight into the early years of the United States — the story of its people, ideals, commerce, and everyday life.

  • Series 1, 1690-1876 - contains 350,000 issues from over 710 American newspapers listed in Clarence Brigham's "History and Bibliography of American Newspapers, 1690-1820". Often printed by small-town printers, this series documents the daily life of hundreds of diverse American communities, providing news and opinion, election returns, letters, poetry, legislative information, prices, advertisements, matrimony notices and death notices.
  • Series 2, 1758-1900 - includes more than 250 18th- and 19th-century newspapers from all 50 states. Covers the westward expansion and the rise of the penny press with its increasing emphasis on society, industry, scientific advances, investigative journalism and stories of human interest.
  • Series 3, 1829-1922 - includes more than 135 19th- and 20th-century newspapers covering the Civil War era, Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, the Progressive era, and beyond.
Please note that the full text may not be available for all issues of a particular newspaper (the database continues to grow). To check the availability of a title, click on the tab "newspaper titles" (you must first remove all other search limiters from the Dates and Eras tab and the Places of Publication tab.). Then see which years are highlighted for full text.
