Each week, Science magazine, the journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, points out four web sites of particular interest. GBIF has been recognized with a citation in the 27 February 2004 issue (vol. 303, p. 1267).

The 27 February 2004 issue of NetWatch, the web-watching feature in Science, included the newly-opened GBIF biodiversity data portal, less than three weeks after the official launch of the portal (see related story, below). Citing GBIF's portal as the reply to an experts' dream of "a website that would unite all knowledge of the world's living things," the short article (see large picture) describes GBIF's data portal. Perhaps most importantly, the article points out that "GBIF, a consortium of more than 30 countries, hopes that more museums and other organizations will connect their databases."
