The Navy nicknamed this fighter plane "Ensign Eliminator" because the pilot's position made it difficult to see the instructions of the officer on deck, when landing on an aircraft carrier. The Marines primarily used the plane to attack ground positions and utilized the plane's machine guns, small rockets and twin thousand-pound bombs and called the aircraft their "Sweetheart of Okinawa." The propeller measured 13'4" and added to the visibility problems of landing on a deck in motion. Powered by an engine of 18 cylinders, the Corsair could cruise at 215 mph and attain a top speed of 447 mph. The Corsair is credited with flying 65,000 sorties and downing more than 2,000 enemy aircraft.
