The First World War called for the rationing of many essential items like gasoline, certain cloth materials, food in general, medicines and other materials of war time value. This British poster is a good reflection of the range of cultural perspectives of the time. Not buying new clothes or using your motorcycle for pleasure can apply to a broad range of citizenry, but the British aristocracy came in for special messages. Urging's directed at them included shutting down their greenhouses and eating simpler meals in order to free up their servants for "more useful purposes" and to not keep any more servants "than you really need." The Library's World War I poster collection contains several more posters with this theme as it applied to both Britain and America.
