Purdue president part of National Research Council call to change rules on high-tech exports, visas

Purdue University President France A. Córdova was one of 20 members of a National Research Council committee who on Friday (Jan. 9) called on President-elect Barack Obama to reassess U.S. export and visa controls, which hinder the economy and research.

"Visa controls, developed during the Cold War, have made U.S. laboratories and universities less attractive to foreign researchers and have helped drive knowledge-intensive jobs overseas," Córdova said. "The regulations, in fact, do little for the nation's security today, while significantly hampering economic growth and innovation."

Purdue graduates urged to make world a better place

Purdue University President France A. Córdova on Sunday (Dec. 21) encouraged new graduates to continue making a difference, both close to home and around the world.

Córdova spoke to 2,749 graduates during two winter commencement ceremonies in the Elliott Hall of Music. In addition to family members and friends in attendance, the ceremonies also were available via a live webcast.

Purdue's Córdova elected to Stanford Hall of Fame

Purdue University President France A. Córdova will be inducted into the Stanford University Multicultural Alumni Hall of Fame on Friday (Oct. 10).

Created in 1995, the Hall of Fame highlights the contributions of Stanford's alumni of color. Córdova, who graduated cum laude from the university with a bachelor's degree in English, was nominated by El Centro Chicano, Stanford's Chicano and Latino organization.

National commitment critical to 'STEM' the tide in sciences

Attracting more domestic students into Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math (STEM) disciplines has been identified as a national imperative, enunciated by scientific societies, national organizations of universities, business groups, the National Science Board and federal science agencies, Congress, and the President. 

This comes in response to reports such as the 2004 NSB Science and Engineering Indicators that stated during the previous 30 years the U.S. had fallen from 17th to third in the world in the number of 18-24 year olds with science degrees.

Purdue trustees approve 'New Synergies' strategic plan

The Purdue board of trustees on Friday (June 20) adopted a six-year strategic plan to position the university to meet the challenges facing humanity, grow and create opportunities for Indiana and the global economy, and enhance student learning for success in a changing world.

"Throughout the years, Purdue has improved the quality of life within Indiana, the nation and the world through its high-quality programs," said board chairman J. Timothy McGinley. "This transformative process will continue with the 'New Synergies' strategic plan."

Report: Better faculty support, riskier research needed for a competitive America

A new report from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences recommends that the United States change its approach to research to maintain a competitive edge in science and engineering.

The report, "ARISE: Advancing Research in Science and Engineering," focuses on the support for faculty members at universities early in their careers and the encouragement of higher-risk, and possibly higher-reward, research.

Córdova elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences has elected Purdue University President France A. Córdova to its 2008 Class of Fellows.

The Academy, one of the nation's oldest honorary societies and independent policy research centers, draws its members from the sciences, arts and humanities, business, public affairs and the nonprofit sector. This year, 190 new fellows and 22 foreign honorary members were elected. An induction ceremony for the new class will be held Oct. 11 at the Academy's headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.

Purdue inaugural launches new efforts for students, 'discovery with delivery'

Purdue President France A. Córdova introduced a number of new initiatives, including ones to enhance student success and provide better channels to encourage interdisciplinary research, during her inaugural address Friday (April 11) at the Elliott Hall of Music.

Córdova, who became Purdue's 11th president in July, said helping both undergraduate and graduate students succeed is a top priority, along with fostering an environment in which Purdue discoveries can be put to use to help solve the world's challenges in a process she calls "discovery with delivery."

Purdue University made a series of major announce­ments this week during its inauguration week for President France A. Córdova.

"These events are the launching pad for some major initiatives, as well as an opportunity to showcase our campus to national and global academic leaders," Córdova said. "We are using this occasion to outline many of the specifics of the university's new strategic plan, which our faculty, staff and students have been working on for many months. This also has been an opportunity to invite government, business and academic leaders to visit our campus to learn more about Purdue and our global vision for the future."

Purdue convocation highlights role, importance of global universities

The Global University Convocation, presented Thursday (April 10) in conjunction with Purdue University's presidential inauguration this week, highlighted the role universities will play in innovation, creativity and preparing an international work force for the 21st century.

The convocation, part of the Discovery Lecture Series, was funded in part by the Lilly Endowment Inc. and was moderated by Purdue alumnus Brian Lamb, C-SPAN's president and chief executive officer. More than 300 people attended the event at Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse.

Purdue launches $304 million drive for scholarships, programs

Starting this fall, new students enrolling at Purdue University will benefit from a $304 million campaign called Access and Success that will expand student aid and programs, President France A. Córdova announced Wednesday (April 9).

The fund drive and internal reallocations will expand the university's student aid contribution to at least $77 million annually. Much of the money raised will be placed in endowments, and endowment earnings will be used to fund the efforts.

$42 million raised toward Purdue's $304 million Access and Success Campaign

A professor, two Purdue alumni and a friend of the university have stepped forward to fund scholarships in a variety of disciplines, helping launch the university's new $304 million Access and Success Campaign.

The university has raised more than $42 million toward the fundraising goal since July 1, 2007, President France A. Córdova announced at a news conference Wednesday (April 9).

$1 million gift will establish engineering technology labs in New Albany

A Jeffersonville, Ind.-based foundation has given $1 million to the Purdue University College of Technology at New Albany to establish advanced-technology laboratories for two of the college's programs.

The Paul Ogle Foundation Inc. is donating the money to construct the Paul W. Ogle Electrical Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology Laboratories. The laboratories will be located in the Purdue Technology Center of Southeast Indiana in New Albany, which is set to open in fall 2008.

Purdue Research Park breaks ground, announces gift for new tech center

Technology Center groundbreaking
The Purdue Research Park broke ground Monday (April 7) on a nearly 13-acre expansion for which the wife of a Purdue University alumnus has donated $3 million to help fund a new technology center.

The deferred gift from Heddy Kurz of Louisville will be applied toward construction of Purdue Research Park's $14.5 million Purdue Technology Center II building, which will be located at 1280 Win Hentschel Blvd. The center will support about 275 jobs and 26 companies. The average annual wage of employees working in the park is $52,000.

Gift to build new home for Purdue Musical Organizations

A Purdue alumnus on Sunday (April 6) kicked off the university's presidential inauguration week with a pledge of $4 million to help build a new home for Purdue Musical Organizations.

Ralph E. Bailey and his wife, Bettye J. Holder Bailey, of Naples, Fla., and Greenwich, Conn., made the lead gift to construct a facility expected to cost as much as $8 million. The music groups currently are housed in a corner of Elliott Hall of Music.

Regenstrief Foundation, Purdue center strengthen efforts to improve health care

The Regenstrief Foundation and Purdue University will expand their partnership in designing a new prescription for the nation's health-care system, officials announced Thursday (April 3).

The foundation, which helped create the university's Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering with a $3 million gift in 2005, is investing $11 million more over the next five years, Purdue President France A. Córdova announced at the President's Executive Roundtable Luncheon at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown. The Purdue center's charge is to use systems engineering, management, science and information technology to improve patient safety and patient care.

International flag procession planned for Global University Convocation

A procession of more than 120 flags representing Purdue's international reach will provide a colorful kickoff to the Global University Convocation in conjunction with the university's presidential inauguration next month.

The Global University Convocation is scheduled for 2:30-4:30 p.m. April 10 in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. Purdue alumnus Brian Lamb, C-SPAN's president and chief executive officer, will serve as the convocation's moderator. The convocation, part of the Discovery Lecture Series, is funded in part by the Lilly Endowment Inc.

Panelist added to Global University Convocation

The president of the University of Houston will join higher education leaders on April 10 at the Global University Convocation, one of the events taking place in conjunction with Purdue's presidential inauguration.

Renu Khator, who also is chancellor of the University of Houston system, received her master's and doctoral degrees in political science from Purdue. She is a scholar in the field of global environmental policy.

DR. FRANCE A. CÓRDOVA ELECTED TO SAIC BOARD OF DIRECTORS

SAIC, Inc. (NYSE: SAI) announced today that Dr. France A. Córdova, president of Purdue University and an internationally recognized astrophysicist, has been elected as a member of the SAIC board of directors effective Feb. 21, 2008. She will serve on the Compensation Committee and the Ethics and Corporate Responsibility Committee.

Córdova became the eleventh president of Purdue University in July 2007. Prior to joining Purdue, she served as chancellor at the University of California, Riverside, from 2002 to 2007. Córdova has also served as professor of physics and vice chancellor for research at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
