Portland, Ore. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will open the Willamette Falls Locks on a limited basis between April 5 and April 30, with extended lock hours beginning May 1.
The locks will be open during April for vessel traffic from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and will be closed weekday afternoons for maintenance. The locks will be closed on weekends.
Beginning May 1 and continuing through Sept. 30 the locks will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.
No funding is included in the President's fiscal year 2005 budget for Willamette Falls Locks, which will result in the Corps indefinitely closing the locks after Oct. 1, 2004.
Willamette Falls Locks, located in West Linn, Ore. is on the National Register of Historic Places and has operated for 131 years; the Corps of Engineers has operated them for past 89 years. There is no charge for locking through the locks.
