Stefano Paltera / Solar Decathlon. The University of Maryland's solar powered house, designed to resemble the path of the sun across the sky, gives an innovative look to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., Thursday Oct. 6, 2005. Maryland, along with 17 other collegiate teams, is competing in the Solar Decathlon, held on the National Mall from Oct. 7-16 in Washington, D.C., to design, build, and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered home.

MexicoFest Family Day - The Museum presents a day of craft making and performances that highlight the artistic and cultural traditions of Mexico. Also included are talks by Museum scientists on their research activities in Mexico. Co-sponsored by the NMNH Latino Program. This event received federal support from the Smithsonian Latino Center. 2nd floor, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Thursday - October 18
Creating the Solar Village - Student leaders in architecture and engineering from three universities at the US Solar Decathlon on the Mall discuss special features of their leading-edge, solar-powered houses and how their experience has helped shape their future as innovators. Participants are from the University of Colorado, Boulder – a two-time Solar Decathlon winner, Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA) and the University of Maryland, College Park. Panel moderator is Bobbie Faul-Zeitler, editor of Green News Update and mentor to the University of Maryland team. Co-sponsored by the Smithsonian Office of Energy Management.
