The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) are responsible for creating and distributing Flood Insurance Rate Maps or FIRMS for every county and community that participates in the NFIP. These designated floodplains are those areas determined to be affected by 100 and 500 year floods. The current regulatory floodplain maps can be found at FEMA through the FEMA Map Service Center. The CWCB houses floodplain information specific to Colorado through the Water Resource Information Center (WRIC).
The CWCB updated the 1987 rules and regulations for regulatory floodplains in 2005. The new rules reflect changes in technology and the current nationally recognized mapping standards. You can find the document under Laws & Rules.
