Wise Owl Did You Know?
Mountain snowpack can sometimes dissipate without turning into runoff that reaches a stream - the process is called Sublimation. Windy conditions, for example, can cause snow to change from solid to vapor without becoming a liquid first!
Flood Outlook
The CWCB has the duty and authority to assist with flood damage reduction activities and is actively involved with monitoring statewide snowpack conditions. The CWCB is performing the following activities to assist communities and citizens with preparation for potential flooding in the State:

  • Chair the Flood Task Force
  • Work with other resource agencies to collect, analyze, and disseminate timely information
  • Provide updated web links for snowpack, streamflow, weather, emergency contacts, and other flood-related information
  • Distribute maps and tables via the internet to present critical snowpack areas and potentially affected runoff areas
  • Provide technical information to DOLA and OEM field representatives to better serve regional and local needs
  • Provide easy access to regulatory floodplain mapping in those areas where flood impacts may occur
  • Provide flood documentation and recovery assistance through regular programmatic funding administered by the CWCB
The CWCB has contracted with John Henz of HDR Engineering, Inc, to provide a daily Flood Threat Bulletin (FTB), which is now in its third year of service resulting from local requests following the 2005 runoff season. The FTB will provide a simple but accurate estimate of the flooding threat facing Colorado counties on a daily basis including: 1) a basin-specific forecast daily, 2) a 7-day flood threat forecast, and 3) a 15-day flood threat outlook. The FTB will be coordinated with the National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Offices in Boulder, Pueblo and Grand Junction, and is currently planned to run from May 1st to September 30th to include the spring runoff season, the summer thunderstorm season, and the early fall monsoon season.

The Urban Drainage & Flood Control District has jurisdiction over flood related activities within the Denver Metropolitan area. Please visit their website for additional information regarding flood and stormwater programs and projects.

The CWCB can be reached by calling 303.866.3441, or by contacting the appropriate CWCB staff person directly to report information concerning specific flood risks, flood response actions, or to inquire about flood recovery needs. Please visit our website regularly during the spring runoff season for Flood Task Force meeting announcements, meeting summaries, and other pertinent data.
