Film Philatelic Movies: Jezebel and Hallelujah
Films
This tempting double feature highlights two films related to recently issued stamps.
1 PM: Jezebel: (1938, 105 min.) This antebellum Southern drama stars Bette Davis and Henry Fonda, who were both featured on recent U.S. stamps.
3 PM: Hallelujah: (1929, 90 min.) One of the first major-studio films to feature an all-black cast, this film tells the story of a field laborer who is enticed away from his community by worldly excitement. The film was recently featured on a Vintage Black Cinema stamp.

Ian W. Record (senior lecturer, American Indian Studies department, University of Arizona) discusses his book Big Sycamore Stands Alone: The Western Apaches, Aravaipa, and the Struggle for Place, which addresses Aravaipa, the sacred homeland of the Western Apaches, and examines the interconnectedness between people and place. Book signing follows.

Family Workshop Special Tour Down by the Sea Shore
ImaginAsia Family Program
(ages 8-14 with adult) More than a hundred years ago American artist Dwight William Tryon used pastels to capture the many moods of the sea. Today, Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto takes black-and-white photographs that meld sea and sky. Discover their works in the Sackler Gallery, and then draw with pastels and charcoal in the classroom to create your own seascape to take home.

Lecture Film Reel Portraits: Jeannette Rankin and A Single Woman
Film and Discussion
(2008, 95 min., directed by Kamala Lopez) The film A Single Woman tells the story of the United States's first congresswoman Jeannette Rankin. Twice elected to represent Montana, in 1916 and 1940, Rankin twice lost her seat for voting against this country's entry into world wars. Her portrait is on display in the related exhibition. Discussion with film director Kamala Lopez and curator of Women of Our Time Ann Shumard follows the screening.
