Accessing Flood Insurance Rate Maps


Introduction
All of the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps are available online. This CWCB webpage is designed to help the general public find the appropriate floodplain map that they are looking for as long as there is a valid street address for the property within Colorado.
 
Step 1: Go to the FEMA website.

Step 2: Click on the FEMA Flood Mapstore Link.

Step 3: Shown in Red, enter the street address, city, state, and zip code (Zip optional)

Step 4: View the Map Search Results Page. This page explains the FEMA map number, the community and the date. You can also view the Letter of Map Changes (LOMRs) or view the map you are interested in. Click on view.

Step 5: Now that you have the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map on the screen you need to click on the Zoom in button on the left, and click on the map a few times until you can read the street names. Once you can read the street names click on the Pan button (hand) and use the mouse to move the map around until you find the approximate property address you are looking for (use the nearby streets).

Step 6: Printing out the Flood Insurance Rate Map. Once you have found the area you are looking for, make note of where on the overall map this property address was at (i.e. the red box below shows the property is near the south center portion of the map). The click on the "Make a FIRMETTE" button on the left.

Step 7: Packaging the Map for printing and emailing. Grab the pink box in the upper left hand corner and then drag and drop it over the south center portion of the map where the property address was located.

Step 8: The FIRMette is complete and can be saved to your computer as a TIFF file or a PDF file. Use this map to determine if the property address was within the 100-year floodplain (inside the grey areas near rivers, streams, culverts, etc.) or out of the 100-year floodplain (out side the grey areas or the 100-year floodplain).
