National Hurricane Preparedness Week
By working together, government, private entities, and civic and charitable organizations can help increase preparedness for this year's hurricane season, which starts June 1. The Department of Homeland Security provides checklists for individuals, families and businesses and information on natural disasters and other threats at www.ready.gov. Once you and your family are prepared, you can help others get ready by volunteering with Citizen Corps.

President Bush Recognizes Five Volunteers During Celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
On May 12, President George W. Bush presented the President's Volunteer Service Award to five outstanding individuals during a ceremony marking Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in the East Room of the White House.

AmeriCorps*VISTA Celebrates 40 Years of Service
USA Freedom Corps joined the Corporation for National and Community Service in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) program on May 23rd and 24th. VISTA provides full-time members to nonprofit, faith-based and other community organizations, and public agencies to create and expand programs that ultimately bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty.

President Bush Recognizes Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Student for Dedication to Volunteer Service
President George W. Bush presented the President’s Volunteer Service Award to Deeneaus Polk, 19, upon arrival at the airport in Gulfport, Mississippi, on Thursday, May 11, 2006. Polk is a student and active volunteer at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
