FY-2006 Discretionary Conservation Program Initial Allocations to States by Program

These maps show the amounts distributed to Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State offices for operating seven conservation programs in fiscal year 2006: Conservation Technical Assistance Program, Soil Survey Program, Snow Survey and Water Forecasting Program, Plant Materials Program, Watershed Surveys and Planning, Flood Protection and Prevention Operations, Watershed Rehabilitation Program, and Resource Conservation and Development Program.

These programs were funded through the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2005. Through these programs, the Natural Resources Conservation Service is capable of accomplishing its mission of providing leadership in a partnership effort to help people conserve, maintain, and improve our natural resources and environment.

This voluntary program provides technical assistance supported by science-based technology and tools to help people conserve, maintain, and improve their natural resources.

This map shows the amounts distributed to NRCS State offices for operating the Soil Survey Program in fiscal year 2006. This program provides soil survey information necessary for understanding, managing, conserving and sustaining the nation's limited soil resources. Funds are provided to inventory the Nation’s soil resources, complete interpretations, and for updating information.

This map shows the amounts distributed to NRCS State offices for operating the Snow Survey and Water Forecasting Program in fiscal year 2006. This program provides mountain snowpack data and streamflow forecasts for the western United States. Common applications of snow survey products include water supply management, flood control, climate modeling, recreation, and conservation planning.

This map shows the amounts distributed to NRCS State offices for operating the Plant Materials Program in fiscal year 2006. This program provides native plants that can help solve natural resource problems. Beneficial uses for which plant material may be developed include biomass production, carbon sequestration, erosion reduction, wetland restoration, water quality improvement, streambank and riparian area protection, coastal dune stabilization, and other special conservation treatment needs.

This map shows the amounts distributed to NRCS State offices for operating the Watershed Surveys and Planning Incentives Program in fiscal year 2006. This program authorized NRCS to cooperate with States and local agencies to carry out works of improvement for soil conservation and for other purposes including flood prevention; conservation, development, utilization and disposal of water; and conservation and proper utilization of land.

This map shows the amounts distributed to NRCS State offices for operating the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Program in fiscal year 2006. The voluntary programs provide assistance to sponsoring local organizations of authorized watershed projects, planned and approved under the authority of the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act of 1954 (P.L. 83-566), and 11 designated watershed authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1944 (P.L. 78-534).

This map shows the amounts distributed to NRCS State offices for operating the Watershed Rehabilitation Program in fiscal year 2006. This program rehabilitates dams that are nearing the end of their 50-year design life. Rehabilitation of these dams is needed to address critical public health and safety issues in these communities.

This program accelerates the conservation, development and utilization of natural resources, improves the general level of economic activity, and enhances the environment and standard of living in designated RC&D areas. Fund distribution relates to the number of RC&D areas in a state.
