Chemical and Biological Warfare (CBW)

Chemical/biological warfare is the term used to describe the use of chemical
or biological agents as weapons to injure or kill humans, livestock, or plants.
Chemical weapons are devices that use chemicals to inflict death or injury;
biological weapons use pathogens or organisms that cause disease. Pathogens
include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and toxins (poisons produced by animals
or plants).
Resources listed in this guide cover the history, nature, toxicity, and
physical effects of chemical and biological agents. They also cover weapons
used and methods of delivery employed, methods of defense and countermeasures,
and technologies for detection and disposal. Also included are references
to the international treaties and related documents written to prevent the
use and proliferation of chemical and biological weapons.
Although both chemical and biological warfare/weapons have a long history
of use in human conflict, most of the resources selected for this TB reflect
contemporary issues and concerns. All are as reliable and authoritative as
possible. However, due to the unpredictability of both politics and technology,
some titles may become rapidly out of date. Most of the resources (both print
and electronic) listed here are available at the Library of Congress, and
many are also available directly through the Web. If available and appropriate,
links are provided to online versions of resources. This guide is not intended
to be a comprehensive bibliography; it is designed -- as the name of the series
implies -- to put the reader "on target." This guide supercedes
TB 90-9.
