Some of my friends disagree with me on this point, but I like Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park better than Yosemite. I'm in good company, though. In 1891, John Muir called it "A Rival of the Yosemite", saying "In the vast Sierra wilderness far to the southward of the famous Yosemite Valley, there is a yet grander valley of the same kind."

Muir was referring to Kings Canyon, immediately adjacent to Sequoia National Park. Here you'll find 36 groves of giant sequoia trees and the three largest trees on earth. It's closed in winter, but the rest of the park is open and it's a great place to go if you're hankering for snow.

If January is a good time for a getaway, what's a good place to go? If you'd rather be too warm than in a snowstorm, now is the time to head for the desert for a Palm Springs weekend getaway. In January, the hold their annual Film Festival, just another excuse to go.
