Coal on Federal Lands
Federally-owned coal plays a major role in the energy supply of the United States, with over 30% (330 Million short tons) produced from Federal Lands. Environmental concerns are increasing the demand for cleaner, low sulfur coal resources located on Federal Lands in Wyoming, Utah, Montana, Colorado and New Mexico.
Royalties generated from Federally-owned coal exceed one quarter of a billion dollars annually, of which half is dispersed to the coal producing States. (Source FS-012-98)
