Before You Come . . .
Plan ahead
Use this information to assist in planning your trip. Museums are usually less crowded in the early mornings on weekdays, right after they open at 10am.
The Smithsonian adventure
Make your Smithsonian visit an adventure for children by talking beforehand about the things they will see. Read a story about the Wright brothers or about dinosaurs to build excitement.

Walk, walk, walk
Ten of the Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C., span an area from 3rd to 14th Streets between Constitution Avenue and Independence Avenue, approximately 1 mile (1.6 km). Because you will do a lot of walking between and within museums, plan to wear comfortable clothing and shoes!
After you Arrive . . .
Ride, don't drive
Avoid the hassle of searching for a parking space—plan to use public transportation to visit the Smithsonian. Metrorail stations or Circulator bus stops are convenient to most Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo. For more information, visit the Metro Web site http://www.wmata.com and D.C. Circulator site http://www.dccirculator.com.
Make the Smithsonian Information Center your first stop
Located in the Castle at 1000 Jefferson Drive, SW; open daily 8:30am-5:30pm, 1.5 hours earlier than museums. Closed Dec. 25.
Tired of Walking? Take the Circulator Bus
To help navigate the largest museum complex in the world, the D.C. Circulator bus offers a quick and convenient service to Smithsonian museums. For more information on this inexpensive, hop-on/hop-off service, call 202-962-1423 or visit the Web site at http://www.dccirculator.com.

Climate
Washington, D.C., has a moderate climate with humid summers typical of the mid-Atlantic, east coast area of the United States. If you plan to visit between April and October, bring lightweight clothing. However, a sweater or a jacket is advisable even for midsummer visitors since most Washington buildings are air-conditioned. Because winters in Washington can be quite cold, warm clothing is recommended from November through March. An umbrella is a suggested item for any time of the year. Comfortable walking shoes are a must at all times.
