The 56th Presidential Inaugural will take place at noon on Tuesday, January 20, 2009. As this historic event draws near, the City is preparing to welcome a record number of visitors. The year 2008 was very “green” for the City of Alexandria. Through a number of accomplishments, the City solidified its establishment as an Eco-City, providing a foundation for continuing its work toward achieving and maintaining a vibrant and sustainable City in 2009 and beyond. Achievements included the adoption of an Environmental Charter, and increased public outreach.
The free King Street Trolley moved to new hours on January 5. The trolleys now operate seven days a week, from 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Trolleys will depart from the Potomac River waterfront and the King Street Metro Station every 20 minutes. The Trolley will continue to operate free of charge.
The Alexandria Transit Company (ATC) Board of Directors approved a plan that addresses how ATC, which operates the DASH bus system, will meet the reduction in City transit subsidies due to declining tax revenue and Citywide current financial challenges. The plan, which goes into effect January 4, 2009, includes a 25-cent increase in the off-peak and weekend fare to match the current peak fare of $1.25, and postponement of service frequency improvements on the AT10 route.
On January 13, Democrat Charniele L. Herring and Republican Joe R. Murray will square off in a special election. The election is being held to replace Brian Moran, who resigned on December 12 from the Virginia House of Delegates 46th District. The district includes 11 Alexandria precincts in the western part of the city. Residents may go on line to www.alexandriavoter.org to determine their eligibility to vote in the special election.

At its November 25 legislative meeting, the Alexandria City Council passed a budget resolution that established guidelines for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 Budget for the City Government and the Alexandria City Public Schools.
