January's Tip
Avalanche!
Current avalanche danger for the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests is considerable. A few days after Christmas, three snowmobilers were caught in an avalanche in Grand County. Two lost their lives.
Colorado continues to have the highest number of avalanche fatalities in the United States. According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, most of these avalanche fatalities occur in Pitkin, Summit and Clear Creek counties with snowmobilers leading in deaths by activity (1997-2007).
It is important to be prepared before venturing out for winter fun. Do you know your avalanche facts?
