The Southwest Coordination Center (SWCC), referred to affectionately as 'swick' within the wildland fire community, is an interagency logistics coordination center responsible for coordinating and facilitating the movement of wildland firefighting resources between Ten Dispatch Centers in the SWA and, as needed, nationally with the National Coordination Center (NICC) in Boise, ID.

Although located at the U.S. Forest Service Southwestern Regional Office in Albuquerque, New Mexico, SWCC operates under the direction of the Southwest Area Coordinating Group (SWCG), not any one specific agency.  As an interagency office, permanent employees of the SWCC come from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management - Arizona State Office, Bureau of Land Management - New Mexico State Office, National Park Service - Intermountain Region, U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service - Southwestern Region, and U.S. Forest Service - Southwestern Region. SWCC, as a unit, does not own any wildland firefighting resources.

SWCC is divided into three functional areas:

(1) Logistics Coordination is the largest of the program areas within SWCC responsible for mobilization and demobilization of wildland firefighting resources to incidents within the SWA and throughout the nation. Area Coordinators manage this program and are responsible for the overall dispatch operation at SWCC, liaison with the National Coordination Center (NICC), and being the focal point for resource order related questions.

(2) Predictive Services and Intelligence is the decision support side of SWCC bringing together fire weather, fire behavior, and fire intelligence to produce a number of outlook products.  In SWCC, the Fire Weather program consists of professional Meteorologistsis who are primarily responsible for conducting weather briefings, monitoring weather and verifying products, liaison with the National Weather Service, overseeing all aspects of the Remote Automated Weather System (RAWS) for the Southwest Area, and create and disseminate the 7-Day Fire Weather / Fire Danger product, and monthly and seasonal outlooks.  The Intelligence Section is responsible for (1) collecting and disseminating daily wildland fire and prescribed fire activity information, (2) managing the Southwest Area Sit Report and ICS-209 programs, ftp.nif.gov site, and SW Fuel Moisture Program, (3) collaboratively working with other Predictive Services Group members on 7-Day, Monthly, and Seasonal Outlook Products, (4) monitoring the status of national firefighting resources, (5) creating and disseminating SWCC Morning Intelligence Briefing, News and Notes, Large Fire Maps, ROSS Reports, YTD and Historical Fire Occurrence Data, Area-wide and individual station ERC Charts, etc, and (6) overseeing and managing the Southwest Coordination Center website.  The Fire Behavior Center is a detailed position within the Predictive Services Unit at SWCC. Once SWCC reaches Preparedness Level 3 or 4, a qualified Fire Behavior Analyst (FBAN) is ordered into SWCC to collect and disseminate information on fire behavior potential throughout the Area, produce a Fire Behavior Outlook and Fire Behavior Map, and participate in briefings as needed.

(3) The Fire Information Office is a seasonally staffed office from March to August and is managed by the Public Affairs Officer for the Fire and Aviationa Management Division of the USFS Southwestern Region.  A Type 1 or 2 Fire Information Officer (FIO) is ordered in to SWCC on a detail basis as the fire season progresses, and works with the SWCC, Zone Dispatch Centers, and SWA Incident Management Teams to gather and disseminate information.  The primary duties of the Fire Information Center is to provide wildland fire information to the news media and the general public via news releases, the Internet, and the telephone, respond to requests from internal sources, mainain and update the Fire Information page on the SWA Wildland Fire Operation's Website, and respond to e-mail that is received via the Website.
