Middle school lesson plan topics - Surveillance

    Active and Passive Surveillance
Students will learn the meaning and process of “active” and “passive” surveillance (or tracking) as it applies to the study of water nitrates and of birth defects. First, the students will apply the beginning of the process of active surveillance by gathering water from various locations and analyzing it for nitrate content. Then, students will use passive surveillance to investigate national trends in birth defects. These applications demonstrate the wide range of surveillance practices.
