this Fauquier County, Virginia, dairy farm is now protected by the NRCS Farm and Ranchland Protection Program

Through its largest Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP) easement to date, NRCS in Virginia, Fauquier County, and the Piedmont Environment Council are preserving 740 acres of prime farmland in one of the fastest developing counties in the State.

Owner John Nissley wanted the FRPP easement to keep the land in agriculture and protect it from development. He operates a family dairy business with nine of his twelve children. Preserving the farmland to him means protecting his family’s tradition for future generations.

South Fork of the Holston Riveris one of the 10 Heritage rivers in the US. NRCS worked with local farmers and other agencies in providing buffers, fencing for livestock, roational grazing, tree planting and recreational opportunities under a cooperative effort.

The FRPP easement prohibits further subdivision of the land that had the potential for at least 29 home sites. The total value of the easement is $870,000 with NRCS contributing nearly $300,000.

The easement also protects a 35-foot wide riparian buffer along three miles of waterways that cut through or adjoin portions of his land. As his farm in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, this easement will play a very important role in protecting water quality as well.
