Java + Mifos:

Bringing open source technology to the microfinance industry

Microfinance institutions help power developing economies by creating access to loans and other financial services for low-income entrepreneurs. Mifos is an initiative launched in 2006 by Grameen Foundation's Technology Center to pioneer an open source information and technology platform to help these organizations better serve their customers. By choosing open source and Java technologies for this initiative, Grameen has been able to leverage the knowledge and strength of the global technology community and bring cost-effective, regionally specific solutions to this industry. Currently, Mifos is being deployed at microfinance institutions in Tunisia, Philippines, Kenya, Nepal, Senegal, Nigeria, and India.
