OSTI Employee Director-Elect of New SLA Division

Valerie Allen takes leadership role in information exchange forum

Oak Ridge, TN — Valerie Allen, senior technical information specialist at the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information, was recently named director-elect of the newly formed Government Information Division of the Special Libraries Association (SLA). The Government Information Division is a forum for the exchange of ideas and information on the value and use of government information and government libraries. It provides an opportunity to integrate and strengthen the dissemination of government information while enhancing the network of those for which this type of information plays an important role.

As technical manager of the interagency Science.gov, Allen has worked closely with many of the participating Science.gov government agencies and has made presentations to various audiences, most recently the South Atlantic Regional Conference of the Special Librarians Association. Allen has received recognition for her key role in Science.gov by being named a 2005 Mover and Shaker by Library Journal. In addition, CENDI, the organization of federal scientific and technical information managers in existence since 1985, awarded Allen one of four 2005 CENDI Meritorious Awards.

As director of the Government Information Division, Allen will serve a one-year term, January 2007-December 2007, focusing on planning future directions, reviewing aspects of the division's operation, and other endeavors affecting the overall philosophy of the division. She will serve as a member of the Division Executive Board. Allen was named director-elect during the Special Libraries Association Annual Conference held June 10-15 in Baltimore.

The Special Libraries Association is the international association representing the interests of thousands of information professionals in over eighty countries worldwide. Special librarians are information resource experts who collect, analyze, evaluate, package, and disseminate information to facilitate accurate decision-making in corporate, academic, and government settings.
