How do I change the system locale so I can use my language of choice?


This article applies to:
  • Platform(s):
    Windows 2000 (SP4+), Windows XP (SP1 SP2)
  • JRE version(s):
    1.4.2_xx, 1.5.0



SYMPTOMS

The JRE displays in an incorrect language.


CAUSE

The system locale is not set to use the language of choice.


SOLUTION

Change the system locale to the language of your choice using these instructions:

Change the System Locale for Windows XP

Note: You must be logged in with an account that has Administrative Privileges.
  1. Click Start > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Regional and Language Options icon.
    The Regional and Language Options dialog box appears.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
    (If there is no Advanced tab, then you are not logged in with administrative privileges.)
  4. Under the Language for non-Unicode programs section, select the desired language from the drop down menu.


Windows XP: Select desired language

  1. Click OK.
    The system displays a dialog box asking whether to use existing files or to install from the operating system CD. Ensure that you have the CD ready.
  2. Follow the guided instructions to install the files.
  3. Restart the computer after the installation is complete.


Change the System Locale for Windows 2000

  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Regional Options icon.
    The Regional Options dialog box appears.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
    (If there is no Advanced tab, then you are not logged in with administrative privileges.)
  4. Under the Language settings for the system section, select the desired language from the list.

  1. Click Set Default.
    The Select System Locale dialog box appears.
  2. Select a language from the drop down menu.

  1. Click OK in the Select System Locale dialog box.
  2. Click OK in the Regional Options dialog box.
  3. Restart the computer.
