If your answer is yes, then you should consider student employment with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC is a federal regulatory agency, established in 1934, whose mission is to protect investors and maintain the integrity and stability of the securities markets.

The SEC has periodic openings for students to work while attending school through the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). Generally, students perform duties such as typing/data entry, filing, photocopying, and answering telephones. Occasionally, students will conduct research on a variety of topics and issues.

Most positions are paid. Salary is determined based on work experience and/or education completed. To qualify, the student must be attending a high school, a technical or vocational school, a 2 or 4-year college or university, or a graduate or professional school on at least a half-time basis, and must be working toward a degree, diploma or certificate.

Applications for the upcoming school year are accepted throughout the year beginning October 1st. Applications expire on September 30th, and a candidate must file a new application beginning October 1st to receive consideration for the next school year. Qualified candidates will be referred if and when a vacancy occurs. Submitting an application and/or being referred for consideration does not guarantee placement in a position.
